Global, economic and social issues of 3 billion people

On Monday 24th February, 116 countries met in Malaysia for the 13th Summit of non-aligned countries, known collectively as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Although there was some coverage of the Summit by news stations and western media, much of the discussion constituted a brief overview of the two day event. The analysis and interpretation of current global events that took place during the Summit provides insights into international issues through the eyes of nations whose opinion in western media is often unheard. The Summit represents the views of some 3 billion people through their elected politicians. This editorial extracts a few of the points made in the final report of the Summit alongside providing readers with access to the full version of the final report. Due to the size of the document, 82 pages, News Views has created quick links to topics so readers can easily access areas of the report that are of specific interest.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) began in 1961, created initially in response to the concerns of the global climate when the Cold War was in full swing. 25 countries attended the initial conference in former Yugoslavia. Since then, the numbers of nations represented at the summits have grown significantly. Summits are held every three years with the agendas moving away from the political arena into discussions on global economics and other important global issues. The countries that are members of the Non-Aligned Movement are listed at the end of the final report.
Source:NAM

The 13th Summit covered 4 major areas; global issues, analysis of the international situation, economic issues and social issues. The overall aim of the delegates was to agree a set of actions by members to promote, "peace, security, justice, equality, democracy and development". A vast number of topics were considered, this article documents only a tiny selection of the very valuable concerns identified at the Summit and documented through the final NAM report.

The first Chapter within the final report is entitled 'Global Issues' and examines such matters as the current international situation, the state and role of the United Nations, international law, disarmament and terrorism. In the present global climate, with the onset of a new war alongside further terrorism, an insight into the perspectives of half of the world who are often on the other side of the battles is vital to promote understanding. Below are a few of the extracts from this section of the report,

  • The Heads of State or Government reaffirmed the Movement’s commitment to the Charter of the United Nations and underscored the need to preserve and promote the centrality and sanctity of its principles and purposes.

  • The Heads of State or Government reiterated the Movement’s position that the imposition of sanctions is an issue of serious concern for Non-Aligned Countries, and that sanctions are a blunt instrument, the use of which raises fundamental ethical questions of whether sufferings inflicted on vulnerable groups in the target country are legitimate means of exerting pressure. The objectives of sanctions are not to punish or otherwise exact retribution. In this regard, they reiterated that the objectives of sanctions regimes should be clearly defined. These should be imposed for a specified time frame and be based on tenable legal grounds and should be lifted as soon as the objectives are achieved. The conditions demanded of the country or party on which sanctions are imposed should be clearly defined and subject to periodic review. Attempts to impose or to prolong the application of sanctions to achieve political ends should be rejected.

  • The Heads of State or Government expressed their strong concern at the growing resort to unilateralism and unilaterally imposed prescriptions and in this context strongly underlined and affirmed that multilateralism and multilaterally agreed solutions, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, provided the only sustainable method of addressing disarmament and international security issues. In this regard, they welcomed the adoption of Resolution 57/63 by the General Assembly on the “Promotion of Multilateralism in the Area of Disarmament and Non-proliferation

  • The Heads of State or Government unequivocally condemned international terrorism as a criminal act. They noted that terrorism endangers the territorial integrity, as well as national and international security. Such acts also violate human rights, in particular the right to life, destroys the physical and economic infrastructure, and attempts to de-stabilise legitimately constituted governments.

In the second part of the report, which looks at an 'Analysis of the International Situation', specific countries are assessed within Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. Examples from this section include;

  • Korean Peninsula: The Heads of State or Government expressed serious concern over the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. They expressed hope that these issues be resolved peacefully, including through dialogue and negotiations. They called upon all parties concerned to do everything possible to resolve the nuclear issue peacefully. They also recognised the contribution of the ASEAN Standing Committee and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) as well as their chairs towards a peaceful settlement of these issues.

  • Cuba: The Heads of State or Government again called upon the Government of the United States of America to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba which, in addition to being unilateral and contrary to the UN Charter and international law, and to the principle of neighbourliness, causing huge material losses and economic damage to the people of Cuba. The Heads of State or Government once again urged strict compliance with the Resolutions 47/19, 48/16, 49/9, 50/10, 51/17, 52/10, 53/4, 54/21, 55/20, 56/9 and 57/11 of the United Nations General Assembly. They expressed deep concern over the widening of the extra-territorial nature of the embargo against Cuba and over continuous new legislative measure geared to intensifying it. The Movement also urged the United States Government to return the territory now occupied by the Guantánamo Naval Base to Cuban sovereignty and to put an end to aggressive radio and TV transmission against Cuba.

To find out what NAM considered significant issues for other various countries around the globe such as Palestine, Iraq, Somalia, Cyprus and Rwanda, view chapter two of the final report

Economic issues were the concern of chapter three. This examined affairs like international trade, monetary issues, sustainable development, food security and agendas specific to Africa's least developed and land-locked countries. For one aspect of external debt, NAM highlighted that,

  • "The Heads of State or Government noted with concern the persistence of the external debt problem and its unfortunate consequences in the countries of the Movement, where the vicious cycle of debt and underdevelopment has become further entrenched. They expressed their alarm at the burden of debt payments which has become heavier in many countries of the South. They emphasised the need for the durable solution of the external debt problems of developing countries. They therefore urged the intensification of measures on debt relief to promote development and investments in accordance with the priorities and needs of developing countries."

For further information on Economic Issues, visit chapter three of the final report.

The final consideration was that of 'Social Issues', such as human rights, racism, situation of women and international drug control. A few of the interesting stances on these themes were,

  • Human Rights: The Heads of State or Government emphasised that human rights issues must be addressed within the global context through a constructive, dialogue-based approach, with objectivity, respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of the States, impartiality, non-selectivity and transparency as the guiding principles, taking into account the political, historical, social, religious and cultural characteristics of each country. Exploitation of human rights for political purposes, including selective targeting of individual countries for extraneous considerations, which is contrary to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, should be excluded. They reiterated that co-ordination of human rights activities must be carried out by the United Nations organs, bodies, programmes and specialised agencies, whose activities deal with human rights, so as to co-operate in order to strengthen, rationalise and streamline those activities, taking into account the need to avoid duplication.

  • International Drug Control: The Heads of State or Government also remained committed to the pledge undertaken at the XI Summit to strengthen international co-operation to eradicate the growing and dangerous links between terrorist groups, drug traffickers and their paramilitary gangs, and other armed criminal groups which have resorted to all types of violence, thus undermining the democratic institutions of States and violating basic human rights. Effective measures must be taken to halt the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, which is linked to illicit drug trafficking and which is generating unacceptable levels of crime and violence affecting the national security and the economies of many States.

The examples detailed in this editorial outline a very brief look at the many issues featured in the report. For any reader interested in achieving a greater understanding of international, economic and social issues, as seen by non-western nations, the final report from the 13th Summit of the NAM is an important read. Insights:
Iraq to publish its first newspaper of the new era

Last week on NWI, a report by Ian Williams of Channel 4 news looked at the beginnings of a new 'free' press in Iraq. Formerly the media was under the stronghold of Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday and as the report explains, his style of control was authoritarian, sometimes violent and often under the influence of alcohol. Williams witnesses the wheels of an Iraqi newspaper starting to turn, the press has begun rolling. But it is not a day ofcelebration and employees cautiously appear from an unmarked building where the journalism is underway. This is the first newspaper in the post-Saddam era but people are still very wary, explains Williams. Full Story

Weekly Coffee Break
The weekly Coffee Break invites readers to discuss,

"Tension between the US and the Islamic Republic of Iran are growing as the US accuses Iran of allowing al-Qaeda members sanctuary as well as starting a nuclear weapons program. Does the US still have any credibility over accusations of weapons of mass destruction when none have been found in Iraq? Since none of the September 11th al-Qaeda operatives came from Iran, is Iran the biggest threat of al-Qaeda? Will the international community support the US if Iran turn out to be the next on the US list?"

As a busy mom, what do you do when a meal is finished? Do you wash dishes and wrap up the leftovers? Do you actually eat the leftovers, or do they sit in the fridge getting yucky? As a busy mom, you want to make sure you make plenty of frugal meals for your family - and that includes a strategic use of leftovers. With the simple tips in this article you will learn a number of frugal that will help use up leftovers.

One of the problems with leftovers, is that we tend to serve them day after day until they are gone.. Say you prepare a giant roast beef for Sunday dinner - there are plenty of leftovers, but the family will get tired if you keep serving slices of roast beef over and over for the rest of the week. You will have to get creative with your meal planning to keep dishes on the table that your family will actually eat.

You can start by chopping that roast up into bite size pieces. Add in some frozen vegetables, and some instant rice. Cook in a large frying pan or a wok, add in soy sauce and a beaten egg and you have a frugal meal of beef fried rice.

That's just one way that a leftover roast can be re-used. Don't forget beef stroganoff, a classic that's simple to make - just add some cream of mushroom soup, sour cream and egg noodles and you have a classic comfort food dish.

Left over hamburgers don't need to go to waste - just take them and break them apart - they can become the basis for a traditional spaghetti meat sauce or you can add some taco seasoning and create a meal of tacos or burritos that is sure to be a family crowd pleaser.

Using a little creative thinking can turn any bunch of leftovers into frugal meals that last the whole week. Just take a moment to plan your main "big" meal and then brainstorm 2 or 3 other meals that can be made with it and make sure you have all the ingredients on hand in your pantry. You'll be more likely to re-use leftovers if you don't have to hit the grocery store for last minute items. If you have enough leftover leftovers, you can even freeze this meal and pull it out of the freezer on another night.

By strategically using leftovers you will save time and money. Just watch your grocery bill go down and your free-time increase. You can even use the savings to order in one night - don't worry - we won't tell.

SEO Duel - Link Building Vs Quality Content

Having had the fortunate opportunity to grow up with and be an active part of the changing Internet, the Google boom and the death of the Content Portals (see now extinct so called search engines) I have through the almost seven years I have known and practiced SEO learned a few things along the way and I like to share my thoughts on today's SEO landscape and how Link Building compares to Quality Content.

Quality SEO Content

Google have once said something along the lines of "create good content and users will come", what most people in the SEO world does not like about that comment is the catch 22 of it as you need to be found as well. Google is regrettably not very good on catching new Quality Content unless it is being directed there by other sites. So how do you solve this?

But quality content on its own carries great value too so it is with this content that you actually will dominate your own rankings. Mind the fact that I am saying Quality Content which is not the same as duplicate or lazy content. This is something that is very difficult to avoid the larger your website gets.

I have worked with SEO on websites ranging from 20 indexed pages to 10 000 000 pages. Properly planned these websites can have the same amount of percentage in duplicate content warnings.

The hard part of having reduced duplicate content on larger scale websites is all down to the planning and structure set in place at the beginning, but you would not dream that your three page website you run today will explode into a ten million page website in six months. Very few people do. This is where you have to be alert and know that if you suddenly have the means and the need to create a bigger version of your website then you should also take the time to make it fool proof for the future. You may need to restrain yourself from trying to put up quick solutions to try and cope with all the demands your websites has. Spend the weeks or month it takes to put a really great system with nifty features in place and room for custom built content and features.

That you during this time only may be able to serve 70% of your potential custom is balanced out by having a great website later that is easy to control and through its sheer size can dominate most of the rankings it is targeting.

Link Building in a paranoid environment

Most webmasters regards the No-Follow as a heavensent gift as it prevents a lot of the spam occurring and as a side question I wonder if this is not causing a chicken and an egg issue as Link Building is supreme for search engines to rank you. But getting links in the paranoid environment we have today is increasingly difficult as we have several anti spam services that sometimes can pick you as being suspect, the No-Follow makes your efforts ending up in narrow areas where you will have your link among hundreds of others linking to their websites in the same purpose.

There is however an area that are not being too protected by webmasters (so far), nor is it too crowded by spam or other link builders and that is the combination sites that are half forum, half community.

The reason these sites are not too crowded yet is because of their moderation, some of them will not even allow you to post more than once every 36 hours! This kind of Link Building takes a lot of effort and you will have to maintain your presence long after the link is dropped, but the effort far outweighs the potential risk of being flagged as spammer and the high amount of unsuccessful comments you have attempted with the "drop and forget" tactic most Link Builder tactics seem to employ at the moment.

I have done it myself and I have seen proof that websites easily can reach a Page Rank of as high as 3 with only five decent Do Follow links and minimal amount of content. There is a trick to that which I will be revealing soon.

Small Scale Link Building

Small scale link building is what you do when you are a smaller website, just launched or if you are a bigger website but currently restricted or lacking the resources to build on a larger scale.

While this title would seem to contradict this little fact, it remains true that the small scale link building requires more work, since you are building links on a smaller scale you have to be more accurate with your keywords, you must have a well developed SEO Strategy as well as quality content to provide. Even the future keywords you are betting on.

Larger Scale Link Building

While this may sounds grand, epic or even daunting large scale link building is just about anything where more than one person build is links for the same purpose and target. This requires less planning and management as you would only implement focus on keywords where they are needed.

With this said you should be wary that if you have more than one person from the same building doing all these link building tactics of the possibility to become flagged, disabled or even blacklisted. Make sure you have your link builders document the amount on not approved links and even better -to keep track of the links they have already put in place, at least on a monthly basis.

The Trick Revealed

The trick is simple, just drive the traffic to your website and google will follow. This is where your SEO Strategy will be put to the test, have you researched the right words, have you located your niche and where your customers are? These answers are not ever answered with "they are on the Internet".

Your SEO Strategy must have defined, located and built quality content for these people. Once this is done you send your SEO Ambassadors forward, but do it slowly, as you will scare away your niche just as easily as the flock of birds by that fountain you walk past every morning, these birds are not particularly afraid of you, but they are not at all likely to befriend you, especially if you just barged in.

Once you have your SEO Ambassadors in place you send in the Social Media, but you arm them with the knowledge that the Ambassadors gathered during the initial approach. If successful, once the Social Media is in place you have established a presence with that niche, you may now move on to the next or keep going for dominance within this niche. Just make sure that your SEO Ambassadors and Social Media Ninjas are checking back in once in a while. A small "hello" or even a few nods in that niches direction goes a long way to keep the maintenance going.

Promotion: link popularity: reciprocal links: link exchange

Link exchange

Do you hate link exchange spam as much as I do? All these link swap requests you get every day asking you to link to online casino or pharmacy website in exchange for a link from some link farm? scam is an interesting theme for a study per se and still awaits its researchers. But in the meanwhile the SEO community is being successful in summarizing the guidelines for the most perfect link exchange scam. (Please, don't take them seriously:)

Filing an Exchange Request

Send an automated e-mail request or use a bot to submit it via an online contact form. Combining the both methods is preferred whenever possible. Use a free e-mail account such as Gmail, or better yet, some foreign free e-mail service to send your message. Sending a duplicate request from your company account is also beneficial. Do send follow up e-mails. Sooner or later your victim will give up and read one of them. Send minimum 100-300 automated requests every day. Push your mail server's spam detection to the limits. Make sure that the website you are trying to contact is absolutely unrelated to your field. Send your request to every e-mail address you can find on the target site. Let the sales or customer support guys forward them to the webmaster. Writing Your Request

Address properly. No names required. Best thing is to use the website's title or at least the URL: "Dear Blue Cheap Online Widgets", or "Hello httpcom" Kiss ass. Tell your victims how much you adore their websites. Do use superlatives. Inform. Let your recipients know how important PageRank and incoming links are. Go in depth with the mysteries and magnificence of the PageRank and how the high PageRank will ensure them the first positions in Google. Scare. Notify them that their link popularity is low, and their positions in search engines are threatened. Share a secret. Tell them that the three-way linking is more effective, since search engines detect and ignore two-way links. Threaten. Notify them that their link will be removed from your high quality directory if they do not provide a link back in the specified number of days. Show your scale. Make your message easily detectable as a bulk sending by setting a different font size and color for the recipient's address and site name. Be unofficial. Use the Internet argot in your e-mail. Like 'u r' instead of 'you are'. This is the Internet - formalism is unacceptable. Threaten them again. With hundreds of reminder e-mails. Use a girl's name. Most webmasters are male and should not resist a lady asking for a favor. Prepare a Sound Links Page

Your link page must have at least 100 outgoing links, preferably uncategorized. Make sure that minimum 50% point to pharmacy and gambling websites. Your proposed links page has to be deeply buried in a keyword-rich URL like: httpcom/widgets/cheap-widgets/amazingly-cheap-widgets/widgets-links/ Make sure the links page URL contains at least one poison keyword like 'links', 'partners', 'directory', or 'exchanges'. Alternatively provide a dynamic URL with a minimum of 100 characters of meaningless parameter values. Choose links pages that are in Google's supplementary index. The PageRank for your page has to be between 0 and 3 with 0 being the best. Make your page look more credible by putting AdSense ads on it. "Well, if Google approves this page, then it is worth having a link from it". Disguise your low PR links pages by opening them in a high PR frame. Orphan pages are the best. Use SEO Tricks

Link to your partners using one of the following options: 'nofollow' attribute javascript links 302 'Found' redirects Edit to restrict spiders from indexing your links pages. Double protect your links pages from indexing by adding meta 'noindex, nofollow' tags.

PSD to HTML

Everyone likes to get a cheap resource or a long lasting investment. People, many times, in order to get quick and cheap solution for their requirement end up choosing an automated tool or a software over manual coding and get themselves in a trap.

These software promises to provide error free code and generate HTML file same as the corresponding PSD but fail to produce it practically and leave the person in a dilemma of whether to go for a service provider and start the project from scratch or invest more time and clean the mess.

There are many reasons which support the use of manual coding over the use of software or any tool which generates codes automatically. Below are some disadvantages of using auto plug-ins and software, which will provide you a clear picture why manual coding wins over automated coding:

1- Bugs: Codes generated from some tool or software do not promise to be error free. You will find some bugs in the codes which will affect either the functionality of the website or change the design from the real PSD.

2- Codes: Where clean code structure comes as a guarantee in manual coding automated coding does not promise to produce clean code structure. And most of the time you get sloppy codes in a very unprofessional manner.

3- W3C Validation: Every service provider producing manual coding promise to generate W3C validated code whereas automated codes have high probability of failing W3C validation.

4- Sacrificing quality: A quick turn around time is what one expects and gets from these tools but after sacrificing the quality of the codes. These tools very rarely produce quality codes and the customer has to get its design recoded. People who are looking just for quick turn around time and can take the risk of avoiding quality can surely bring these tools into their use.

5- Lose Customer: With the help of these tools, one can surely impress the customer with meeting the deadline but will ultimately loose them when the customer looks at the quality.

6- Fail Online Presence: If you are using an automated tool for converting your website design into HTML/XHTML then, you must be aware of the nature of codes. The codes produced by any software are not SEO friendly and hence, damage all your SEO efforts.

These are few of the reasons why one should avoid the use of automated tools and go for manual coding. If you are ready to risk your business just for the sale of saving few bucks then, you may use these tools as an option.
