NWI Insights - Diplomatic efforts for North Korea and the US
As has been well-documented in the news, North Korea has become an increasing cause for concern not only as a military threat to South Korea and Japan but to countries around the globe. They recently rejected participation in the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, in response to what they claimed to be antagonistic conduct by the US, in particular their inclusion in the "Axis of Evil". Since this they have on several occasions demonstrated aggressive behaviour, such as the launching of a missile test shortly before the ceremony of the new South Korean president, and displayed defiance to the requests of the international community to rejoin the treaty. The headline report from Newswatch provides the latest information on the escalating crisis.
Newswatch reported that the US have called for multilateral talks to try and find a diplomatic solution to the stand off between the two countries. The US has requested the inclusion of China, Japan, South Korea and Russia in talks, all of which asserted the US, have a direct stake in the possibility of nuclear weapons in North Korea, Newswatch relayed.
Newswatch stated that the suggestion of multilateral talks by President Bush was at odds with North Korea who have repeatedly called for direct talks between the two countries. In the meanwhile, the US government has continued to increase military pressure on North Korea through strategically authorizing US bombers to take up position in Guam, stated Newswatch. This Newswatch noted could possibly harden the North Korean stance on the issues in a very delicate situation.
To balance this perspective, Newswatch detailed the information coming from North Korea. According to the report, the state-owned central news agency in North Korea had recently documented that if the US government were willing to hold bilateral talks the situation could be resolved peacefully. North Korea, recounted Newswatch, were against multilateral discussions as this they believed took away the emphasis and responsibility of the US to deal with the situation that they had caused.
Newswatch also told viewers that, North Korea had issued strong condemnation of the US talk of possible military action and that North Korea viewed this was seen as a dangerous and abusive statement.
It seems that the conflict between the US and North Korea is simmering at uncomfortably high levels and it will take all the diplomacy of both nations to come to any kind of resolution.
