NWI Insights - US considers sending troops to LiberiaLast week a story on NWI by NBC reported that the US is considering sending several dozen marines to Liberia to help protect the US embassy from rebel forces. Following this there is a possibility of up to 850 troops being sent as part of an international peacekeeping force. However President Bush is not prepared to take any action until Liberia's President Charles Taylor steps down. The US also has other requirements that need to be fulfilled before agreeing to send its own troops. Firstly US soldiers are to be part of a multinational force and secondly that they will only be stationed in Liberia for a limited time, up to 2 or 3 months. The report stated that the military are not keen to take on a new mission due to their heavy commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush undertakes his tour of Africa this month and is under intense national pressure to take the lead on Liberia. If everything falls into place, the report states that within two weeks there should be troops on the ground in Liberia.
